How to cultivate my little passion vine?
2.5 young potted Passiflora Alata (Ruby Glow) How to grow best in my backyard in Texas Hill Country. IE, exposure rite on, to drain the pot and soil? Site preparation, drainage is not the Hardy Alata to this area so just do not know the best place to plant it. Thanks
The passion vine prefers a frost-free climate. There are varieties that can take temperatures in the top 20 (F) without serious damage. The Blue Passion Vine "is quite hardy and salt tolerant, but the plant does not grow well in the heat of summer. The yellow passion fruit is tropical and does not like frost. The purple and yellow forms have need protection from the wind. The care of the passion fruit vine requires full sun, except during hot days of summer, if possible, provide partial shade. The vine is a producer and can quickly get out of hand, if possible, plant near a fence wire netting or a trellis. Passion fruit vines growing in many soil types, but make sure the plant has an excellent drainage. If you want to keep the flower vines almost continuously, regular water is necessary. The vines are shallow-rooted, and will receive thick layer of organic mulch. Passiflora vines grow vigorously and require regular fertilization. Stay away from simply using a 20-20-20 liquid food. This can encourage good growth, but may be too green and flowers are not enough. Use a fertilizer with a ratio more in line with a 2-1-3.
